2024 Spring and Summer Cattle Update
2024 Spring and Summer Update - 12 Heifers and 12 unassisted births. The cows all stayed mud fat through the winter on hay and poor pasture, and no issues birthing. They are great mama cows now and take excellent care of the calves. The calves are growing well, and we will be holding back heifer calves this year to expand our herd in this direction. I absolutely love these PCC influences cattle. We went with two terminal sires for the 2025 calf crop as I intend to beef and sell off all calves in 2025 for cashflow and further investment in facility upgrades. We are breeding part of the herd to a black Gelbvieh Bull and part to a Herford Bull.
The drought has been a challenge to manage this summer. I sold all of my Dexter and American Aberdeen cattle and calfs to reduce herd size ahead of schedule. We relocated all the animals to other farms that had available pasture and water and are holding steady on numbers so far.
